What are six of the most dangerous words in the English language? MAYBE IT WILL JUST GO AWAY. Every time I suggest this as a typical thought pattern, patients smile or nod in acknowledgment. Of course, the reason is that most people do think about their health problems in this way. As a society, we’ve been led to believe that our problem is the symptom, and have been sold a pill/potion/lotion for whatever ails us to mask those symptoms.
Wouldn’t it be better to allow common sense and reality to set in? The health problem is, in fact, what is CAUSING the symptoms. Symptoms will often disappear and re-appear, and new (seemingly irrelevant) symptoms may soon appear. Until you make the choice to discover and address the cause of the problem, your health will be impacted and more importantly, the condition will progress. The bottom line is that denial never helps one bit!
Eventually, the bill will come due and hopefully, it’s not too late. Using symptoms as a gauge to measure your health and well-being can be dangerous. Cancer can grow without any symptoms. A heart attack, the first symptom of cardiovascular infarction, is usually the last.
If you do have symptoms, be curious. Ask the right questions and see your symptoms for what they are – clues.
Yours in good health,
Dr. Jane
