Imagine a traveler who is journeying to a distant land. The land is known for its harsh climate and rugged terrain. The traveler knows that to survive, she must adapt to her new environment.
As the traveler enters the land, she is immediately struck by the cold temperature. She shivers uncontrollably and her breath comes out in clouds of steam. But her body is quick to adapt. Her blood vessels narrow to conserve heat and her muscles begin to shiver to generate heat.
After a few days, the traveler reaches the mountains. The air is thin and it isn’t easy to breathe. But her body has already begun to adapt. Her kidneys have produced more erythropoietin, which has stimulated the production of red blood cells. Her heart is also pumping more blood to her muscles and other tissues.
As the traveler continues her journey, she encounters several other environmental challenges, such as high winds, extreme temperatures, and poor air quality. But each time, her body adapts. Her lungs become more efficient at filtering the air. Her skin becomes thicker to protect her from the sun. Her immune system becomes stronger to fight off infection.
The traveler’s journey is a metaphor for the process of physiological adaptation. Our bodies are constantly adapting to the environment around us. These adaptations allow us to live in a wide range of climates and to withstand a variety of environmental challenges.
Finding and correcting misalignments in the spine that are interfering with the nervous system is essential to keeping your nervous system healthy!
Trees with deep and wide root systems can adapt to all kinds of situations. Deep roots offer protection against drought, strong winds, and extreme weather conditions. We need to be like these trees with healthy root systems. In the human body, a healthy nervous system allows your body to be adaptive to the environment like the roots are for the trees.
The key, therefore, is not avoiding challenges but enabling and enhancing our body’s ability to adapt to them.
Just as the traveler in the allegory, we are all capable of adapting to change. When we are faced with a new challenge, our bodies automatically begin to adapt. This process may take time, but it is essential for our survival and well-being.
Yours in good health,
Dr. Jane
