No, I’m not talking about your spouse! What does that pain in your neck tell us? Scanning palpation is when the doctor palpates/feels your neck for spasms and sensitive trigger points.
What causes these spasms and trigger points? The atlas misalignment!
When there is a misalignment it causes mechanical strain on nerves that come out from in-between the bones. See the diagram below.
The main nerves that get aggravated are the greater and lesser occipital nerves and the suboccipital nerve. This is why your neck is tight and painful when the atlas is out of place, and also why it’s a reliable way to check for atlas misalignment.
When the bone is realigned, the pain and spasms improve! How does it happen so quickly? A nerve impulse travels up to 120 meters per second. That’s very fast – almost 270mph! When the pressure is off that nerve, it’s in its nature to feel better quickly!
Yours in good health,
Dr. Jane
